On the northern border of Bangladesh, Sherpur is an ancient town built in the dreamscape of Meghalaya's snow-white Meghpunj and Neel Garo hills, the Brahmaputra descending from Manas Sarovar to touch the Himalayas, and the green valleys of numerous streams like Bhogai, Nitai, Kangsh, Someshwari and Malizhi. Dashahan was fixed for the 10 (ten) mile wide Brahmaputra crossing from Sherpur to Jamalpur. From this, the Pargana north-east of the Brahmaputra was named Dasakahniya Baju. It is believed that in the 18th century AD, Sher Ali Gazi of Gazi clan became the Jagirdar of this Bajur and ruled for 21 years from the present Gazi farm or Garjadripa. And this area was named Sherpur after this legendary ruler.
